Recognizing that education is the best way out of the vicious cycle for the very poor, ECM Libra Foundation projects are largely targeted at providing access to basic education. We focus our attention on the most marginalized segments of our community in the country, in particular the Orang Asli in the Peninsula, the Kadazans in Sabah and the Ibans and Bidayuhs in Sarawak. We have also included the urban poor and hard core poor communities outside of the big cities such as Kapar and Kuala Selangor.
The Foundation’s objective is to fan out and to reach as many of these marginalized communities as possible and one of the best ways is to work with partners who have the ability to reach directly at the grassroots level. Most of the projects undertaken by ECM Libra Foundation revolve around the Stay-In-School (SIS) theme. We call the programme Stay-In-School Programme because the common objective is simply to help poor children stay abreast in their school work so they do not drop out.
To ensure we make a difference, other than providing funds to run tuition classes (with emphasis on Bahasa Malaysia, Mathematics and English), we collect and collate the results the children obtain from school tests to measure the effectiveness of the work done at the ground. We look out for groups with strong leadership at the ground who are willing to take responsibility for their own children’s education and we work with them to drive outcomes and visible results over several years.
