Rebuilding of Houses for Kg Batu 19, Karak which was totally destroyed by the flood

Kg Batu 19, Karak which has a population of 12 families totaling 63 individuals is close to the edge of the Telemong River. In Dec 2021, the Orang Asli village was hit with a massive flood that had also affected many areas in Selangor and Pahang. The flood waters that carried large amounts of debris including logs destroyed all the homes of the villagers leaving them with no shelter other than make-shift tents.

Prof. Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Executive Director of Sunway Centre for Planetary Health together with Ganesh Muren of Saora Industries Sdn Bhd appealed to Dato’ Seri Kalimullah Hassan for financial assistance to help rebuild the houses for the villagers. ECM Libra Foundation agreed to provide the funds needed. Ganesh, together with his group of volunteers and the Orang Asli villagers themselves then started to rebuild their new homes. The money was used to purchase building materials for the homes as well as defrayment of costs such as food & drinks and transport for the volunteers from nearby villages.

It was a huge success as they managed to rebuild all 12 houses for this small village within 14 days. The villagers are happy to have a roof over their heads with the new houses. These are simple two room houses built with some concrete pillars, wood and zinc and the villagers will continue to enhance the houses with Attap covers on their own efforts.

On 22nd Jan 2022, Dato’ Seri Kalimullah, Chairman of ECM Libra Foundation, Mr Lim Beng Choon, Trustee of ECM Libra Foundation together with Prof. Tan Sri Dr. Jemilah visited Kg Batu 19, Karak and met with the villagers who are all very thankful. The village has no electricity nor water supply but a gravity water system has already been installed with the help of other funds. Solar lighting will be the next step after the Attap roof covers are installed.
