ASEAN (the Association of South East Asian countries) is a diverse collection of cultures, languages and stories. Since its inception in 1967 with an initial five member countries, ASEAN’s since expanded membership has been working together to bridge the differences in culture, language and religion to create a unified economy of over 640m people. In the spirit of ASEAN, we believe that diversity is a strength, and providing opportunities to brightest young minds of ASEAN means uplifting social progress not just for our own countries, but for our neighbours too in the spirit of Prosper Thy Neighbour espoused by ASEAN.
While opportunity gaps are usually complicated and can take many forms, one of the most common education opportunity gaps in ASEAN is the lack of financial resources of lower-income households that give higher-income families an advantage when it comes to doing well in school. The inability of families to pay for test-preparation, tutoring or extra-curricular activities often contribute to lower academic achievement.
Education and lifelong learning are important tools for breaking the cycle of exclusion, poverty, domestic violence and family breakdown.
This programme is not intended to define what the opportunity gap is. It is aimed at closing this gap.
The ECM Libra Foundation’s Close The Gap Scholarship Fund is a multi-million dollar scholarship fund for academically and culturally gifted students in ASEAN to live up to their academic potential. Full and partial scholarships are available to students from Year 10 onwards to attend Epsom College Malaysia - the only international campus of the prestigious Epsom College in the UK.
